Gluggle Jug: The Fish That Talks Back

At Welcome Home, we believe the most memorable pieces in your home are the ones that spark conversation and a little delight. Enter the Gluggle Jug: a whimsical, fish-shaped vessel that’s as charming as it is timeless.

Designed in a range of colors and crafted to resemble a fish, the Gluggle Jug has been enchanting households for over 150 years. But its real magic? The unmistakable glug, glug sound it makes as you pour. Simply fill it about three-quarters full—right between the eye and the belly—and let the jug do the rest. It’s equal parts function, fun, and fascination.

A Storied Past, Reimagined for Today

First created in the 1870s by British makers Thomas Foster and Sons, these “gurgling jugs” began as playful novelties. The iconic fish design we know and love today was later introduced by Dartmouth Pottery, and what started as a children’s toy quickly became a beloved household staple.

For decades, Wade Ceramics handcrafted these charming pieces, building a legacy of quality and craftsmanship. Today, that tradition lives on with the Original Gluggle Jug Facory. Each jug is still made by hand in Stoke-on-Trent in England by the very artisans who have perfected the craft over generations.

Style Meets Versatility

Crafted from durable ceramic, these jugs are as practical as they are beautiful, designed to be used, enjoyed, and admired.

From petite minis to statement-making XLs, there’s a Gluggle Jug for every moment:

  • Mini: Perfect for cream at your morning coffee or a cheeky cocktail for one
  • Large: Ideal for intimate dinners, or even as a playful watering can
  • XL: The showstopper—our favorite for bold floral arrangements and vibrant centerpieces (and yes, the most dramatic gurgle!)

Bring Home the Conversation

Whether styled on a dining table, filled with fresh blooms, or gifted to someone special, the Gluggle Jug is more than décor it’s an experience. A little splash of heritage, a dash of whimsy, and a whole lot of charm.

A Few Delightful Details

  • The fish is a carp, a symbol of good luck in Chinese culture.
  • Often dubbed “the unofficial hostess gift of Massachusetts” because until 1970 Wade Pottery had a factory located outside of Boston.
  • A royal favorite! A special edition of the Gluggle Jug was gifted to Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip in 1958 to commemorate their visit to Britannia Naval College.
